Why Adopt?
So you want a new best friend in your life? Good for you! Opening your home and heart to a furry companion is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. Saving a life at the same time? Even better.
Save a Life
Every 11 seconds, an animal is euthanized in the United States. Approximately 3.7 million animals of all ages are put down annually. Our dogs and puppies all come from high kill animal shelters in Florida and Georgia. Taking in a Pixel Pup truly is the difference between life and death. Whether you are interested in providing temporary refuge through our foster program, or providing a furever home, opening your door to a Pixel Pup makes all the difference in the world. As one of our foster moms says, "I can't save them all, but I can save this one."
Overcoming the Price Tag
Dogs adopted in Maine come with an adoption fee between $185 and $430 (see our Adoption Fees section below for more information). However, consider that every Pixel pup (unless otherwise noted) comes spayed/neutered and up-to-date on shots. This can be a cost savings for you in the end, when you consider the typical veterinary fees for these services:

-
Spaying/neutering $150 - $300
-
Distemper vaccination $20 -$30 x2
-
Rabies vaccination $15 - $25
-
Heartworm test $15 - $35
-
Flea/tick treatment $50 - $200
Putting Your Support in the Right Place
Adopting a pet means that when you pay your adoption fee, your money is going to an organization that treats animals humanely. Purchasing a pet at a pet store means direct financial support to puppy mills. Saving dogs and placing them in loving homes is the #1 priority of the Pixel Fund. Puppy mills and pet stores are private business that put profit before the well-being of their animals. To learn more about puppy mills and why we oppose them, click here.

Application Process
Completing an application is the first step toward adoption. If you haven't found the right Pixel pet for your home yet, completing an application now will allow you to be pre-approved once your special fella comes along. There is no commitment or obligation in completing an application. To process an application, we will read the information you provided thoroughly and try to match you with the right pet. We may call you to discuss your information and have a dialog about your wants and expectations for a furry friend. We will verify your application information with your veterinarian and landlord, if applicable.
Adoption Fees
We try to recover our costs so that we can continue to rescue more animals, and so that we can treat sick and injured animals. Besides the vet costs and the costs of spay/neuter, our single biggest cost is transportation. Therefore, animals adopted in Maine will have a higher adoption fee to reflect this reality. In addition, animals entering Maine are required to have additional vetting that adds to the expense of rescue.
Our dogs, unless otherwise noted because of age, are spayed or neutered, current on age appropriate core vaccines such as rabies (dogs three months and older), distemper, parvovirus, certain hepatitis strains, Bordetella, Leptospirosis, etc. Dogs over six months will have been tested for heartworm, Lyme disease and Canine Ehrlichiosis, and in some cases Anaplasmosis (the latter three are tick borne diseases). All animals will have received a worming and at least one month of heartworm preventative. All will have been treated with a monthly flea treatment. Adopters will also receive a copy of their new pet’s medical records. We require heartworm preventative for all dogs. Most of our animals are microchipped and you will receive information about how to register your pet.
Adoption of puppies too young for spay or neuter will be considered conditional adoptions until proof of spay/neuter is provided. We will arrange an appointment at our veterinarian, or reimburse the equivalent at the vet of your choice upon proof of altering.

Paw it Forward
This program is a way for animals to pay it forward to another animal. The Pixel Fund will have a larger adoption fee for any purebred or very desirable breed animals to help offset the costs of other medically needy animals. As you may know, The Pixel Fund is known for taking the injured animals who need us most. With Paw it Forward in place, the larger fee will go towards another animal’s needs. Whether it be orthopedic surgery to repair a broken bone, heart-worm treatment, or treating other illnesses or conditions, we believe paying it forward for all creatures is important.
We are unable to do adoption for residents of Massachusetts at this time.
